cPanel cPanel is a fully-featured, web-based control panel that allows you to manage your domain through a web interface. You have the ability to manage all aspects of your hosting account including email, FTP, files, backup, CGI scripts, and web site statistics. For more information on cPanel we recommend reading the cPanel documentation .

Disk space
Disk space is the amount of disk space on our servers that we provide for you to place your web files. Such files may include HTML pages, images, audio, video, and numerous other files.

Data transfer
Data transfer, also known as bandwidth usage or traffic, represents the amount of data that can be transferred to and from your web hosting account each month.

Hosting accounts
Hosting accounts are accounts that are setup where you are allocated disk space, data transfer, a number of email addresses and other features. A hosting account is associated with a main domain name and generally comes with its own username and password access to cPanel .

Domains
A domain name allows you to have your own branded location such as www.yourdomain.com.

Subdomains
Subdomains are a way of creating separate hosting accounts under on your main domain name.
For example, you could set up your first name as a subdomain under your master account familyname.com , which would be accessed as firstname.familyname.com . This is an effective and inexpensive way of providing a website for everyone in your family. Email addresses also look great as you can setup accounts which would look like firstname@familyname.com .
If you are a business, subdomains are also a great way to establish branding and focusing on separate product lines.

Parked domains
Domain parking allows you to park a domain name at your website. For example, you could have your own hosting account for Yoursite.com and have also parked Yoursite.com.au at Yoursite.com . So we really have one website with two URLs and both work the same way.

Additional domains
Additional domains (aka Addon domains) are the number of domain names that can be used for separate websites, in addition to the main domain attached to your web hosting service.
Addon domains can save you money as you are able to host multiple different websites under the single hosting account. Why pay for separate hosting plans for your websites, when you can pay for one with EdgeDesigns and save?

Dedicated IP
A dedicated IP address is a number that is designated to a particular website owned by you.
The American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN) require a valid reason for someone wanting a dedicated IP address. Dedicated IPs should only be purchased if you require use of private SSL for your website. If you do not know what private SSL is, then it is safe to say you do not require one.

FTP and Email
FTP accounts
With an FTP account, you can log into your website using your favourite FTP client program. If you do not have one, we recommend downloading SmartFTP which is free. Once you have an FTP client, you will be able to directly transfer files to and from your disk space.
We provide you with the ability to create many FTP accounts, which comes in handy if you set up subdomains for other people.

Emails accounts
Email accounts allow you to receive mail at an email address you set up under your domain name (i.e. yourname@yourdomain.com). Mail servers we support include POP3, SMTP and IMAP. As such you can setup your email accounts in popular applications such as Outlook and Eudora, and we also allow you to access your email through your browser via webmail .

Auto-responders
Auto-responders allow you to generate automatic email replies to people upon receiving a message from them. These are particularly useful if you receive lots of emails every day, and you would like to create a standard reply to let customers know that you have received their email and will respond as soon as possible. We allow you to set up as many auto-responders as you need on any email address possible with your domain.

Email forwarding
Email forwarding, also known as email alias', allows you to redirect all message sent to an email address at your domain, to any other email address. Some sites often ask for an email address, and a good practice is to hand out your forwarding email address rather then your main email address. That way if you begin receiving lots of unwanted messages, you can simply delete your forwarding address and your main address is saved! Forwarding is also useful if you need to redirect your email to somewhere else; for example, if you work at two separate locations, or have gone on holidays.

Mailing lists
Mailing lists make an ideal tool to facilitate communication between people about any topic you care to have discussions about. We make available the use of a popular mailing list script called Mailman . This script allows you to set up a mailing list with a large number of configurable options, including who is on the list, when messages are sent, and welcoming messages to new subscribers.

Email spam filter
To filter out unwanted messages, we offer the use of a mail filter called Spam Assassin . When enabled, it can be used to check for spam using a large number of pre-set rules that check the header, body, and sender of all email messages sent to your domain mailbox.

Webmail access
Webmail access allows you to read your email online, through a browser in a similar fashion to how Hotmail or Yahoo work. You can still use your favorite offline email application, however being able to access your email through webmail means you can easily check your email from anywhere you have Internet access. We currently provide a choice of two different webmail programs - NeoMail or Horde .

Development
Shared SSL
Shared SSL is made freely available with all hosting accounts, allowing you to secure pages on your website where private information is transmitted.
A disadvantage when using shared SSL instead of a private SSL certificate is that it looks unprofessional. This is because users access secure pages on your website through the server URL address (i.e. https://secure.EdgeDesigns-server.com/~account/).
Private SSL certificates look more professional, allowing pages on your website to be secured under your own domain (i.e. https://www.yourdomain.com/).
CGI, PHP, SSI
We provide your main account with a CGI-BIN as well as any subdomains or addon domains you create. CGI allows you to make use of the very many useful CGI scripts out there written in PERL and other languages, including the many pre-installed scripts we make available to you through cPanel .
We also support PHP, which is a widely-used general-purpose scripting language that can be embedded into HTML pages making it very suitable for web development.
In addition to this, we provide Server-Side Includes (SSI) which helps make it easier and faster to develop and maintain dynamic websites.

MySQL databases
MySQL has become the world's most popular Open Source Database, and continues to gain popularity as time goes on. There are very good reasons for this seeing as MySQL was designed for speed, power and precision in mission critical, heavy load use.
We provide MySQL databases with our hosting accounts as well as access to the popular phpMyAdmin user interface.

If you develop your websites using FrontPage, you will be happy to know that we freely provide access to FrontPage extensions. If you do not know what FrontPage extensions are, don't worry - just pretend and feel happy for those who use them. =)

Installed scripts
We can provide a number of Installed CGI scripts which include shopping carts , bulletin boards, chat rooms, guestbooks, counters, clocks, form mailing and a few others.
There are also a range of PHP and Perl scripts that have been added which can be quickly and easily installed. Some of these include phpBB, InvisionBoard, PHP-Nuke, osCommerce, PostNuke, Xoops, phpWebsite, phpAuction, livehelp, phpBook, b2, phpAdsNew, phpCollab, 4Images, AdvancedPoll, OneOrZeroHelpDesk, Classifieds, pMachine, AardvarkTopsites, WebCalender, paFileDB, phpDig, phpLinks, phpMyFAQ and phpSupportTickets.*

Custom error pages
We allow you to customise error pages on your website. So for example, if a visitor enters an incorrect URL on your website; rather than recieve the plain "HTML 404 - page cannot found" error, you could provide them with a more helpful error message in the same style as your website.

Protected directories
On your website you can restrict access to a particular directory by assigning user names and passwords to individuals who you authorise to have such access. This is a safe and easy way of securing sections within your website.

Cronjobs
Cronjobs allow you to schedule tasks to be executed at certain times or time intervals. For example, say you created some sort of system maintanence script which is required to be run every day to keep your system up-to-date. Rather then executing the script yourself manually every day, you could set up a cronjob to execute the maintenance script every day at midnight.

Logs and statistics
Web statistics
We include three different website statistic viewing programs - Webalizer , Analog and AWStats . Use the statistics tools to keep track of information such as what pages are visited the most, where users are being referred from, where they are located and so on.

Error logs
The error log contains a history of any errors that occur when visitors attempt to view your site, for example, requested files not being found. It is a useful tool that can help you track down broken links throughout your website, as well as reveal suspicious user activity.

Raw log file
You can download the raw access logs which contain all the recorded hit information that your site has received. If you have a preferred reporting tool you like to use, then raw log files are really useful as you can import them into most applications.
